It was about time for Rhodes to host a big athletic event again, this time an Triathlon Race on 30 October 2016. The event will be an Olympic Distance Triathlon, consisting of 1.5 km swim – 40 km cycling and 10 km running. Rhodes is an ideal scenery for this type of events. As the Ocean Lava Founder put it, the Ocean Lava Planet aims to giving athletes the opportunity to enjoy special triathlon events in unique locations and Rhodes unique history provide the necessary conditions to promise a wonderful experience for all participants. The weather conditions will be ideal at the time of the event (the weather still feels like summer in October, but it is not hot) and the race will be held inside the city of Rhodes, allowing athletes, locals and tourists alike to enjoy the event in its most beautiful parts. The swimming race will take place in the crystal clear water around the Aquarium, followed by a bike ride through the old port and along the west coast and a run race along the walls of the medieval city.

Organisers of the event are the local Apollon Triathlon Club. Since 2010 the club has organized more than 30 triathlon races events, including 2 full Iron Man events in South Rhodes in 2014 and 2015. Their races started as small friendly events and have since then developed into major races in the Greek Triathlon scene, while they are popular among athletes as part of their preparation for major international events abroad. http://www.apollontriathlon.gr/.
